Walls and ceilings
A skim is a thin finishing coat trowelled over plaster or board that is still sound. It is the quickest way to turn tired, patched or marked walls into a flat surface ready for paint.

Boards out, new boards in
When plasterboard is damaged, loose or has been patched too often, it comes out. New boards go up and get a skim finish, so the wall or ceiling is sound as well as smooth.

Blown plaster sounds hollow, cracks and crumbles. It has to come off. The wall is taken back to brick, built back up and finished with a skim coat.

When it has dried to an even pale pink with no dark patches, and not before. That is usually days rather than hours and depends on the room; you’ll be told on the day. Start with a watered-down mist coat.
